The size of the tight-knit Jewish population and its well-developed infrastructure led some Jews in town to refer to Postville as a shtetl. Shtetl is a Yiddish term that literally means “little town.” Shtetls (the plural in Yiddish is shtetlekh) were small towns with large Jewish populations that existed throughout pre-Holocaust Eastern and Central Europe. Some shtetls were founded a thousand years ago. Shtetls were socially stable and resilient communities where Orthodox Judaism flourished, safe from outside influence or interference.

What they offer

Chabad of North East Iowa is a Chabad house in Postville, led by Rabbi Aron Schimmel.

There is a synagogue on the premises. A kosher store is run here. There is a Judaica shop. They kosher kitchens for the community.

Classes run regularly, one-to-one study can be arranged, courses from the Jewish Learning Institute are taught and public lectures are held. There is a library.

For children there is a Hebrew school and after-school programmes.

They officiate at circumcisions.

The center visits patients in hospital, distributes food packages and runs a free loan fund.
