LONE TREE — It is brand new and unused, yet ancient and eternal — this Torah is the bond between Moses at Mount Sinai and the shiny new suburbs of south metro Denver.

A newly handwritten Torah scroll’s completion Sunday at the 7-year-old Chabad Jewish Center in Lone Tree was an occasion that bridged millennia here just before the High Holy Days.

A specially trained ritual scribe, or sofer, labored for about a year in Jerusalem, using a quill and animal-skin parchment, to make an exact copy of the oldest Torah — the Five Books of Moses — for this fledgling Jewish community.

The scribe left the Torah’s last paragraph to be filled in — and with the oversight of another specially trained but more local scribe, the local congregation finished it.

What they offer

Chabad Jewish Center - South Metro Denver is a Jewish community centre in Lone Tree, led by Rabbi Avraham Mintz.

There is a synagogue on the premises. A kosher store is run here. There is a Judaica shop. They kosher kitchens for the community.

Classes run regularly, one-to-one study can be arranged, courses from the Jewish Learning Institute are taught and public lectures are held. There is a library.

For children there is a preschool, a Hebrew school, after-school programmes, a children's club and a mother-and-child group.

Older children and young adults have a teen club, bar and bat mitzvah instruction, a bar mitzvah club, a bat mitzvah club and a young professionals' circle.

They officiate at weddings, circumcisions and funerals. Couples are prepared for marriage. A chevra kadisha serves the community.

The center visits patients in hospital, visits Jewish prisoners, looks after the elderly, works with children with special needs, provides humanitarian aid and runs a free loan fund.

There is a women's group. Mezuzos and tefillin can be checked here. The building is wheelchair accessible.
