Chabad of Cape Town is a vibrant Jewish community centre. It is part of a world- wide network of non- profit educational and social welfare institutions dedicated to the vision of the Lubavitcher Rebbe- the making of this world into a better place; through increasing awareness of moral and spiritual values.

Sent by the Lubavitcher Rebbe in 1976 Rabbi Mendel and Avigail Popack came to the shores of Cape Town to promote Jewish ideals. The Chabad centre situated in Sea Point was founded in 1982 and subsequently moved location following a devastating fire in 1992, establishing its new premises at 20 St. Johns Rd Sea Point.

Today it is the hub of activity, educating both young and old guiding people to strengthen their Jewish identity through camps, conventions, educational classes , prayer groups, community services, prevention and intervention counselling, hospital and sick visitation programmes etc.

What they offer

Chabad Centre of Cape Town is a Chabad house in Cape Town, led by Rabbi Mendel Popack.

There is a synagogue on the premises. Visitors are welcomed for Shabbat and holiday meals. There is a Judaica shop. They kosher kitchens for the community. A mikveh is available.

Classes run regularly, one-to-one study can be arranged, courses from the Jewish Learning Institute are taught and public lectures are held. There is a library.

For children there is after-school programmes and a mother-and-child group.

Older children and young adults have a teen club, bar and bat mitzvah instruction and a bat mitzvah club.

They officiate at weddings and funerals. Couples are prepared for marriage.

The center visits patients in hospital, looks after the elderly, works with children with special needs and distributes food packages.
